In many parts of the world, tropical conditions allow poisonous animals to make a home and harbor diseases not found in more temperate climates.
Anyone making a trip to tropical areas should be aware of the risks involved, and take appropriate precautions to ensure you don’t fall ill. Below is a list of items that should form part of a good medical kit for tropical areas.
In tropical conditions, even small wounds and insect bites can become infected quickly. It is important to carry insect repellent to prevent bites, as well as anti-malarials if you are in an affected area. Carry sticking plasters to keep small wounds clean and anti-inflammatories such as Ibruprofen for bruises or sprains.
Antihistamines will help for any allergic reactions, including those suffered by many people bitten by mosquitoes and other insects. Blister care is essential for those planning on undertaking any jungle hikes, with Vaseline and bandages helping to patch up worn-out feet.
Another common ailment is traveler’s diarrhea, which can be combat with electrolyte powder. If symptoms of diarrhea persist, consult a doctor as there is a chance you may have contracted dysentery. Always pack some kind of antibiotic ointment for cleaning wounds, and remember the all-important sunscreen, which should be with you at all times.
Your medical kit doesn’t need to be particularly complicated to be of great assistance if you find yourself in unfamiliar conditions far from medical help.
