Explore the Amazon in Peru

The South American nation of Peru boasts huge swathes of Amazon rainforest, most of which is untouched by tourism.

There are two main routes into the Amazon in Peru. The first is Puerto Maldonado in the south of the country, which offers access to the pristine rainforests of Madre de Dios. While the area boasts wonderful landscapes and wildlife, it has become known for drug smuggling. However, if you book with a reputable operator you will have an amazing time.

Perhaps the best option is to take a cargo boat down river from Yurimaguas to Iquitos. These boats are the only lifeline for isolated communities along the river, and carry livestock, supplies and even vehicles alongside passengers. You will swing lazily on hammocks on deck, taking in the amazing sunsets and getting used to the relaxed pace of Amazonian life.

Be warned these trips are not for travelers on a tight schedule. The boats only leave when full and it’s not unheard of to spend a couple of days in dock before departure.

Once you arrive at Iquitos, the largest city in the world without road or rail access, take a day or two to soak up its unique charms. From here you can book a wildlife spotting tour or visit traditional healers in the forest.

Many tour agencies will offer you the chance to try the traditional psychedelic vine known as ayahuasca, but be sure to go with a reputable operator. There have been tales of people falling ill after taking a trip with cheaper companies.

From Iquitos you can either continue downstream to Colombia and Brazil or fly back to Lima. The Peruvian Amazon is a relatively economical alternative to other South American countries and the general standard of services is high.
