You likely haven’t heard of Daufuskie Island, but you’d be remiss if you didn’t check out this East Coast hideaway, which charmingly calls itself “the Nantucket of the South.” The hidden gem sits off the southeast coast, near both Savannah and Hilton Head and offers a luxurious environment, with enough remoteness and laid-back, low-key attractions to make visiting a true getaway.
You can access the 1,100-acre island via either boat or helicopter, with helicopter rides starting at $400 per person, available from airports in both Savannah (SAV) and Hilton Head (HHH). Once on the island, you’ll find there are no cars, and everyone gets around via electric golf cart (or the occasional horse).
If you’re traveling with a few friends, you’ll want to book the 1873 Lighthouse, which you can claim for your own and share with three of your favorite people for just $850 per night. The lighthouse overlooks the Calibogue Sound and features views of the dolphin-filled waters, a rocking chair-lined porch, cozy fireplace and elegant bathrooms (with clawfoot bathtubs!). If you’re traveling by yourself, you can book a room at the picturesque and historic Strachan Mansion.
In terms of things to do and see, there’s plenty to enjoy for nature and history lovers. Take a waterfront horseback ride to see the shoreline at a slow pace. The 10-square-mile island is rife with Gullah history. See the historic indigo and cotton plantation, the first African Baptist Church and the historic Mary Fields School House, among other points of interest.
