Have you felt like you’ve been swindled out of your savings by money-hungry airlines charging a pretty penny for services such as checked bags, WiFi, snacks, drinks and in-flight entertainment? Fight back against airline bundling schemes and ask for your money back with the Unbundlers Campaign.
Spirit Airlines launched the initiative earlier this month, encouraging consumers to demand money back from carriers that include baggage, food and other services as “free” perks in their higher airfares. The promotional Unbundlers.com website features a duo of (fictitious) lawyers searching for travelers who have been “bundled” and desire refunds. Visitors can choose from a list of six major U.S. airlines and use the “Unbundle-o-thon” calculator to find out how much they have been “swindled” by paying for amenities they didn’t use.

“Bundling is a practice that, at best, is less-than-transparent,” said Ben Baldanza, president and CEO, Spirit Airlines. “When airlines tell their customers the item or service is free, it just isn’t true. We feel air travelers should only have to pay for what they want or need — not be forced to pay for everything an airline may offer. We did the math on all those unused items and it adds up to billions of customer dollars.”
Spirit prides itself on its endeavors to put passengers in charge by allowing them to pay only for what they want, not what they don’t. Called Frill Control, the airline’s unbundled approach enables customers to pay the lowest total price for air travel.
“It’s a fun way to point out a serious issue,” said Baldanza. “At Spirit we pride ourselves on being very upfront and honest about what you get — and what you don’t — when you purchase tickets on our airline. All airlines should be as transparent with their customers and should let them know exactly what they’re paying for.”
