For many people, juggling the work-life balance is difficult — from maintaining a successful career to spending time with family or friends, managing all things adult can be a challenge. The key is to really think about your values and needs in both realms of your life and work to continue your relationships and activities on a daily basis. Finding a balance between the two main areas of your life will help you feel fulfilled.
Here are a few of our tips on how to easily balance your work and play life without sacrificing your sanity.
Make deliberate choices about what you want out of life. Set your priorities and goals and instead of going with the flow, decide what you want from life and how you want to spend your time.
Communicate. Stay on track and make a conscious choice to talk to the important people in your life. If something isn’t working, change directions and communicate what is working and what isn’t.
Don’t be afraid to unplug. We live in a connected world, from cell phones and iPads to computers and TVs, turn off from the outside world to recover from weekly stress. Give yourself space to let ideas or thoughts surface. Try meditating before or after work, or find another way to release stress after a long work-day.
Schedule one thing you look forward to each day, whether that’s hitting the links early before work or going to a museum or having a massage. The activity doesn’t need to be time-consuming, expensive or complicated, simply set aside an hour to catch up on a book, go for a walk or run or take a bath. Protect your private time and catch yourself daydreaming in the subway; don’t let yourself burn out.
Learn to say no. Remember it is okay to say no. You can respectfully decline offers to run the PTA bake sale or take on the additional project at work. When you stop guilting yourself into certain tasks, you’ll find more free time to focus on activities you truly enjoy.
Evaluate your work-life balance on a regular basis. Your needs will constantly change; therefore, you need to set aside some time to reflect on your current balance. Think about where you are, where you want to be and how you will get there.
Be present, attentive and efficient wherever you are whether it is home, work or activities. Invest your time and energy into the current moment and try not to stress about the future — it has a direct connection on how successful you are in achieving the work-life balance.
