Fans of folk music should get down to Rhode Island this summer for the chance to see some of the biggest acts in the scene in a spectacular setting.
The festival is hosted in Fort Adams State Park, which boasts amazing views of the East Passage and Newport Bridge. There will be four stages for music, a huge number of food and crafts stands and other cultural displays.
Since the festival began in 1959, bookings focused on folk, blues and country artists. This year top acts on the bill include Flight of the Conchords, Patti Smith and Elvis Costello.
The music kicks off Friday, July 22 and runs until Sunday, July 24. Those who purchase three-day passes will be expected to find local accommodations, which include campsites or guesthouses.
Each day, the festival begins at 11 a.m., and music stops at sundown. This isn’t going to be an all-night rave, but Newport Folk Festival does bring some big names to town if your tastes are more relaxed than Skrillex and the EDM crowd.
The venue is around 1.5 hours from Boston and 3.5 hours from New York. Tickets cost $199 from the official festival website and selected online retailers.
