Foods to Pack for a Long-Haul Flight (and How to Get Them Through Security)

 As airlines start nickel and dime-ing their way into the world’s wallets, travelers have had to get crafty in order to get around newly enacted add-on fees, especially when it comes to in-flight meals. Since this luxury is no longer guaranteed on some flights, particularly on low-cost, long-haul vessels, and because airport food is notoriously overpriced, passengers pack their own food to bring on these long flights. But what types of food are allowed to pass through security and also last multiple hours on a plane in varying temperatures?

 

Sandwiches, with or without meat: Sandwiches are solid choices to bring in flight as they pass the liquids test, they’re easy to pack and they tend to fit into most carry-on bags. They’re also a great way to get multiple flavors and nutrients into a small surface area. Most cheese and deli meats can be added to a sandwich and stay fresh for a few hours, but avoid anything too spicy or odorous out of respect for your neighbors.

 

Dry snacks, like nuts: Grab a bag or two of mixed nuts with dried fruits and seeds for a filling and simple snack even easier to stow than a sandwich. Full of protein and healthy fats, there are enough varieties of these snacks to make a few different combinations to toss in your carry-on.

 

Bars: The most compact option on this list is the granola bar. Packed with essential nutrients and the greatest variety of flavor, granola bars are a substantial treat. If you anticipate warm temperatures, skip any bars that have chocolate as an ingredient.
