Ranked No. 9 on Philadelphia Magazine’s 2015 Foobooz 50 Best Bars of Philadelphia, Fountain Porter offers an incredible beer menu as well as my favorite cheeseburger in town.
I have visited Fountain Porter, located in South Philadelphia’s unique East Passyunk Crossing neighborhood, several times to sample some of the harder-to-find craft beers on tap and enjoy its $5 cheeseburgers. Tucked away on a quiet corner in the EPX area, the venue offers limited bar seating and a cozy back room and is almost always packed on weekend nights.
I popped in on a recent Saturday night to check out its latest beer list and grab a cheeseburger. The tap list changes frequently, but when I visited, it featured quite a few brews not normally found in Philadelphia, including Carton Brewing’s Boat Beer, Hill Farmstead’s Conduct of Life #1 and Wekken Sour by De Proefbrouwerij. I chose a deliciously crisp Hop on Drink’in Berliner weissbier-style brew from Copenhagen’s Mikkeller and was happy with my decision.
Shortly after ordering, my group’s food arrived, including crispy fries and classic, simple burgers with cookout-style patties, melty cheese, fresh lettuce and tomato on fluffy potato rolls. For only $5, the burger is a steal, and with great company, delicious beers and an awesome all-vinyl playlist, it tasted even better.
Check out Fountain Porter’s website to view its constantly rotating, impressive tap list.
