Trends / History

Fans of American history will appreciate France’s revolutionary past. Here are four sites to check out in Paris.

Tuileries Palace
Now Tuileries Gardens, the original palace was used for the Constituent Assembly, National Convention and Council of Five Hundred. It was also headquarters for the Jacobin Club, the most influential group of anti-royalists at the time.

Bastille
The Storming of Bastille is generally seen as the catalyzing event of the French Revolution. Parisians of the Third Estate stormed the symbol of aristocracy and Louis XVI banished finance minister Jacques Necker for his sympathy with the commoner class.

La Conciergerie
Originally a Merovingian palace, the Conciergerie is now used for the French judicial system. It also served as a jail in the beginning of the French Republic, imprisoning Marie Antoinette and hundreds of other royalists who would end up being executed by guillotine.

Basilica of St. Denis
Many French monarchs who were executed ended up resting in the Basilica of St. Denis. Tourists now come to see its necropolis, though much of it was looted.
