Much of Laos is still undiscovered country, thanks to a massive amount of unexploded bombs scattered across the landscape. That doesn’t mean you can’t still get off the beaten path. Here are a few spots backpackers tend not to frequent quite so much.
Phonsovan
While most of the tourists of northern Laos lounge in Luang Prabang, a little to the east lies the quirky town of Phonsovan. This village is home to the Plain of Jars, an area of land housing thousands of “jars” that jut out from the ground and whose origins still mystify archeologists today.
Tat Lo
The Bolaven Plateau in southern Laos is home to fewer tourists than the north, and you’re likely to get lost here without a guide. Tat Lo is a short trek from the more popular Pakse and the locals here are always happy to show new people around. The surrounding landscape is absolutely breathtaking.
Luang Nam Tha
Another northern Laos town, Luang Nam Tha is great spot for people looking for a little outdoor adventure. There’s plenty of kayaking available along this river town as well as cycling opportunities. The occasional tourist does stop by, so you won’t have trouble finding accommodation.
Don Kong Island
Don Kong Island is actually adjacent to one of the more popular spots in Laos, Don Det. However, if you want to get a feel for the 4000 Islands (and you should) then Don Kong is the much calmer option. It’s filled with locals and no real roads, so you’ll get a better idea of how the Lao people truly live here.
