Tips / Travel

Exploring earth can be fun, but it can pose many challenges. A language barrier can be a troubling feat for people visiting countries with an unfamiliar language. Here are some tips on how to navigate your trip as you go:

Learn the basics. Learn how to say “hello,” “thank you,” “goodbye,” “you’re welcome,” and “do you speak English?” as these few basic words and phrases can get you far. Try to familiarize yourself with their hand gestures as that is another effective way to communicate.

Use a translation app. There are a lot of translation apps available to consumers. Even though the translations may not be 100 percent correct, the person to whom you are speaking will probably get the idea of what you’re trying to say, and they may be able to help you. It is helpful in learning basic words and phrases in any language.

Be nice. Do not get frustrated when the person with whom you’re trying to communicate does not understand what you’re saying. Be mindful your visiting their country and you, as the visitor, need to respect that. If you are nice, they might be inclined to find someone who actually speaks English to assist you.

Know the address of your hotel. Always keep the address of your accommodation close to you. At the end of the day, your final goal is to get back there safe and sound.
