For a long time now we have been hearing about the advent of wearable technology, but the truth is the sector has not exploded to anywhere near the extent some commentators predicted.
When most people think of wearable technology, it is devices such as the Apple Watch that spring to mind. However, Google and Levi’s are taking a different approach with Project Jacquard.
The idea behind the project is to make any garment smart using special fibers known as conductive yarns. Google developed the yarns in such a way that they look no different than the other materials used in your favorite Levi’s jacket.
Project Jacquard makes normal surfaces interactive, so you can control devices using simple swipe gestures. No need to take your phone out of your pocket to reject an incoming call while mid-conversation — simply move your hand over the gesture-sensitive area in your jacket.
Jacquard aims to offer a blank canvas to fashion designers, encouraging them to make clothes that allow the wearer to connect to devices and online services. For travelers, this could mean increased personal safety as you no longer have to take out your phone in dangerous areas.
One of the first garments to get the Jacquard treatment was the Levi’s Commuter Trucker Jacket. The jacket is expected to be available spring 2017.
