Tips / Destination

Planning a trip to West Africa? The first names that will pop up on most travel guides are likely Senegal and Ghana.

Look beyond those two to Guinea and you will be rewarded with mountain plateaus, beautiful forests and amazing beaches. There is something for everyone, including great hikes, wildlife watching and impressive waterfalls.

Very few people visit Guinea, hit by the ebola outbreak in 2014. However, by 2016, the country was declared ebola-free. You will most likely start your trip in the capital, Conakry, unremarkable apart from its hopping live music scene.

Head away from the capital and take a boat to Iles de Los for some relaxing beach time. Visitors should also make time to explore the Fouta Djalon plateau, with its spectacular mountains as waterfalls, which make it a great area for hiking. Find a local guide and spend a few days exploring the trails that link villages and natural attractions.

Elsewhere, Parc National du Haut Niger is another top spot for nature lovers, home to crocodiles, hippos and chimpanzees. You will need to find a private tour, though, as visitor facilities are few and far between.

The Argosaronic Islands Are Calling

The Saronic or Argo Saronic Islands of Greece call travelers to explore its seven small islands and islets brimming with history, natural sites and more. With most easily accessible by boat, the islands’ proximity to ports of Athens make the Saronic Islands an ideal destination for those preferring shorter boat rides.
