The largest country in Central America is famous for its volcanoes, and there are plenty of opportunities to hike among them.
For accessibility, nowhere is better than the colonial town of Antigua. Just an hour from Guatemala City and the international airport, it’s the first stop on most itineraries. In addition to its beautiful cobbled streets, Antigua is a great jumping off point for hikes to the volcanoes of Pacaya and Acatenango. While Pacaya can be tackled in an afternoon, Acatenango requires a guide, camping equipment and an overnight stay.
There are also good hiking opportunities around Lake Atitlan, with the Indian’s nose near San Juan de la Laguna a popular day hike. Further north is the second city of Quetzaltenango, home to a number of hiking outfits including Quetzaltrekkers. The company offers multiday hiking trips in the local area, as well as the beautiful highland area around Nebaj.
For those who like to scale peaks, the Tajumulco volcano is a must-visit. As the highest volcano in Central America at 4,202 meters above sea level, it’s a real challenge. Volcanoes are everywhere you go in Guatemala, but another of the most popular for visitors is Ipala, in the south of the country. The hike is fairly relaxed, and the amazing crater lake provides a welcome opportunity to cool off after you ascent.
