While New Orleans may be best known for its lively bar culture on Bourbon Street, the Crescent City is home to many historically significant bars. If you’re looking for a bit of history to go with your drink, check out one of these historic New Orleans bars.
Tujague’s
Located near Jackson Square in the heart of the French Quarter, Tujague’s just celebrated its 160th anniversary. The top-notch bartenders serve up classic cocktails like sazerac or vieux carre alongside an impressive wine and liquor selection. A true New Orleans institution, the bar and restaurant hosted many famous patrons including Harry S. Truman, John D. Rockefeller, O. Henry and Cole Porter.
Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar
Not only the oldest bar in the city, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar is one of the oldest bars in the United States. The historic building was once a front for the Lafitte brothers’ smuggling operation. Today, the bar serves up beers and daiquiris from its home on Bourbon Street.
Pat O’Brien’s
Pat O’Brien’s bar opened in 1933, following its previous operation as a speakeasy. The bar is known for its signature drink, the Hurricane, first served in 1940. Make sure you experience the famous dueling piano bar during your visit.
Henry’s Uptown Bar
Away from the hustle and bustle of the French Quarter in the Uptown section of the city, Henry’s Uptown Bar has been serving guests since 1900. Popular among locals, the bar is known for its numerous drink specials and dive-y atmosphere.
