Head to Vörösmarty Square for Budapest’s Christmas market. Open through Dec. 31, the market boasts locally made goods as well as mulled wine and gingerbread treats. St. Stephen’s Square also features a holiday market with more than 100 vendors. The market is open through Jan. 1.
Ice skating is a popular wintertime activity in Budapest. The city is home to several illuminated ice-skating rinks. Városliget ice skating rink is one of the largest in Europe. Located in City Park at the foot of Vajdahunyad Castle, the rink offers nighttime skating sessions.
Warm up following your outdoor activities with a visit to one of Budapest’s famous thermal spas. Széchenyi Thermal Bath is the largest and most popular in the city. Rudas Thermal Bath and Gellért Thermal Bath are also great options.
Budapest’s Advent Tram runs through the end of December. Board the festively decorated tram and tour the city. Visit Museum of Fine Arts for its first comprehensive exhibit of El Greco works, open through Feb. 19. Take in a performance of the Nutcracker at the recently renovated Opera House to further get into the Christmas spirit.
