Tips / Other

You may be under the impression 2016 took more celebrities than any year on record, but you would be wrong. The year 2013 was a banner year for celebrity deaths, almost doubling those in 2016. There may be a celebrity you might want to visit in a cemetery in order to pay your respects. Keep these important tips in mind:

Shhhhhh

Even in a cemetery like Pere Lachaise in Paris, chockfull of dearly departed famous and infamous, you’ll find more graves of everyday people who have lived lives that may seem unremarkable to you, but were rich and poignant to their families. Be quiet. Don’t sing “Riders on the Storm” in front of Jim Morrison’s grave; don’t openly weep for someone you didn’t know; don’t wave a lighter in the air.

Open Alcohol is Probably Not a Good Idea

Unless you are in Mexico on the Day of the Dead, staggering around with the beverage that killed your hero is not recommended.

This is Not a Theme Park

It is easy to get carried away in a cemetery like Pere Lachaise which offers maps of the cemetery and welcomes more than 3.5 million visitors a year. But, it is still an operating cemetery with a waiting list for plots. Enjoy the beauty of the place, even kiss Oscar Wilde’s grave, but be respectful.
