Tips / Other

If you’ve never been rock climbing — or have only been once or twice in a gym with friends — it can be an intimidating sport to break into. You’ll have to learn where to go, what gear to buy and how it all works, and it’s tough to do all of that without a mentor to take you under their wing.

There are a few ways to break into the sport. First, find a local gym if you can to take classes or practice indoors. Next, check out books from your local library that can help you learn a few basics and techniques, along with the requisite lingo. There are also tons of articles and resources online, like this basic rundown of the sport and its variations plus equipment from REI. Doing these two steps simultaneously will help you build your knowledge and test it out in person.

Try to find a local group that will help hone your skills, whether it’s through an indoor gym or an outside climbing spot. Clubs may exist in your area, along with organizations that focus on teaching new outdoors skills or organizing group trips. Finding a welcoming atmosphere for teaching and learning can make all the difference in your experience, and can decrease the intimidation factor of breaking into a new sport.
