Experiencing another country is not only about taking part in the sights and sounds, its also about taking part in its people. Meeting those who live their lives amongst a different culture can be profound, and finding other travelers in the area can be comforting. Knowing how to approach this search for friends in a foreign land takes just a few simple steps.
Take Advantage of the Nearby Hostels
Unfortunately, some travelers do not take opportunities to meet roommates in hostels, or shy away from these places all together. Hostels provide much more than a simple place to stay — they are potential meeting grounds for like-minded travelers to share ideas and plan activities in the area.
Get Away from the Typical Tourist Traps
Hitting the usual landmarks is all right for the first day or two of a trip, but after that, it is a smart idea to check out some of the more atypical locations. Do some research and learn the restaurants, cafes and bars that the locals flock to.
Speak Universal Languages
While knowing a language is the easiest way to speak to others, it is not always feasible for travelers. However, communicating through other universal means is a great substitute. Activities like dancing at bars and clubs, playing group sports and sharing drinks are understood across most cultures and experiences, and can help relationships blossom.
