Tips / Travel

Flying across oceans means adventure awaits on the other side, and fighting the dreaded jet lag is an adventure in itself. How do you beat this almost guaranteed travel obstacle so you are able to enjoy every minute in your new environment?

Before you leave home, try to adjust your schedule. Depending on the direction you are traveling, it’s not a bad idea to start synching your internal clock with your destination’s current time. Work schedules may inevitably hinder this attempt, but any amount of preparation goes a long way in preserving your energy.

Hydrate before, during and after your journey. Don’t underestimate the power of fluids while traveling. Skip the pre-flight coffee and airport lounge beer, and opt for a giant bottle of water instead. Bring your own bottle (empty before the security check, of course) and refill it at the water fountains after the security line.

If you have booked an overnight flight (which is a better option to combat jet lag), try to get some shut-eye while in the air. Pack a sleeping mask and ear plugs into your carry-on bag, and consider popping a sleeping pill to aid your rest, but only if you have experience taking such medications at a safe dose. Melatonin is also a safe over-the-counter option to consider after you land to help you adjust to the new time zone.

Upon arrival, get outside and soak up some Vitamin D. It may be tempting to want to crash on your hotel bed the moment you spot it, but it’s best to journey outside and let your body get used to its new surroundings.

If your dog isn’t the best around other dogs or people, your problems are even more difficult to overcome.
