How To Layer for Winter Outdoor Activities

Safety

If you’re planning to exercise outside on a cold day — whether you’re taking a long hike or playing in the snow — it’s important to consider your clothing before you go. Dressing for the weather, as well as the exertion level you’re planning, will help you stay warm and comfortable throughout your day. If you overdress, you risk sweating, which can be dangerous in cold weather. Underdress, and you’re likely to be just as vulnerable.

Layering is important in winter. Wear a base layer made of a wicking fabric like wool rather than cotton, so that any moisture doesn’t stay close to your body and make you cold.

Next, add a mid-weight layer that provides insulation, also with a fabric like wool or fleece. And finally, finish with a waterproof outer layer that breathes well while keeping rain and snow from penetrating your clothing. Your outer layer should come with ventilating zips around the armpits and inner thighs to help your body breath rather than sweat.

A great rule of thumb if you’re going to be active in the winter: Dare to be cold. Starting out slightly colder than is comfortable will help ensure you’ll be warm — and not sweat — as your heart rate goes up.
