After all the time and effort you spent putting together a vacation or figuring out travel plans, you want everything to run smoothly, but a majority of the time things go awry. It is hard to plan for the unexpected, but the best to thing to do is stay calm and hope for the best. Here are some tips on how to prepare for everything to go wrong while traveling.

Your flight is delayed or canceled: Issues with flights can be frustrating especially since there is usually nothing you can do to prevent or fix the issue. Be sure to have your airline’s customer service number on hand. If you get bumped from your flight, be sure to ask for cash instead of a voucher. Load a service on your phone like an airline app or Hopper to book last-minute flights.

Your luggage is lost: Standing at baggage claim waiting for your bag to come out is an uneasy feeling, as you never know if it made it to your destination. Whether it’s at the start or end of your trip, there is no feeling greater than seeing your luggage plop on the belt. In order to avoid luggage mix-ups, make sure to include a colorful and easy-to-spot luggage tag and bag. If the worst scenario happens and your luggage is lost, make sure to file a claim ASAP. Be sure to pack any important documents in your carry-on like your passport, insurance information and itineraries in case your bag is lost. Always pack an extra outfit in your carry-on bag.

You forget an important item: When you have a million things running through your mind the night before your trip, it is common to forget an important item, like medicine. If you absolutely need this item during your travels, have someone trustworthy ship it to you but take into consideration the process, cost and how long it will take.

You miss your flight: If you are worried about missing your flight, have a back-up alarm, whether it is an alarm clock, wake-up call or family/friend; make sure you have a back-up plan in place.
