Tips / Other

You’ve dreamt about this day for the last few weeks, telling yourself you can do this, this is what they prepare you for in college and as long as you don’t show up in your pajamas you’ll be okay. There are probably 100 questions racing through your mind creating feelings of excitement and angst on how to have a successful first day at a new job.

Here are a few of our top tips on how to prepare yourself for your first day of work.

Be On Time

This is no longer college where you can stroll into class 10–15 minutes late and expect no one to notice. Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early. If you have to, leave an hour early, test out the traffic and drive around familiarizing yourself with the area. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Relax

Everyone experienced first day of work jitters and they are completely normal. Wear your favorite outfit or bring your favorite snack, something to ease your mind on your first day. Say hello to your new co-workers, if possible strike up a conversation. Remember, you were hired because they felt you were the most impressive candidate, stay confident.

Come To Learn

Let’s face it, you don’t know everything. Make it your goal to learn something new every day. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and walks of life, maybe one day someone may be willing to share their knowledge with you. Remember it is okay to fail, because you will be able to grow and learn from your mistakes. Let the potential to learn inspire you.

Ask Questions

If you don’t know how to do something, ask, even if you are 50 percent sure, it doesn’t hurt. By asking questions it shows you have initiative and are interested in the company and industry. Yes, curiosity may have killed the cat, but in this instance the proverb does not apply.
