Is a Round-the-World Cruise Right for You?

Tips / Travel

More luxury cruise lines are offering round-the-world cruises and more travel influencers are taking them, but is a round-the-world cruise right for you?

Take, for example, Seabourn’s newly announced 2021 World Cruise: Extraordinary Oceans, a 140-day excursion aboard Seabourn Sojourn. The cruise visits 32 countries across six continents. While seeing so many destinations in one trip can be tempting for some travelers, there are a few things to consider.

The Time Commitment

A trip that’s 140 days in length is no short getaway. Do you have the time to commit to a round-the-world cruise? Most don’t, especially if they work a normal job, and even if your boss is cool with you taking off for a while, you may not have a job when you get back. You could likely make the time commitment work if you have a remote job or work for yourself, but then do you really want to spend such an amazing experience checking emails and working (and dealing with cruise ship WiFi)?

Also, keep in mind these cruises aren’t just leaving port every other day of the week. You have to be available during specific time frames.

The Price Tag

A 140-day luxury cruise certainly doesn’t come with a budget-friendly price tag, either. The Seabourn 2021 World Cruise: Extraordinary Oceans comes in at a hefty $60,929 for the most affordable suite. Of course, that does include extra perks like round-trip, business-class airfare; thousands of dollars in shipboard credit; unlimited internet; private car transfers; unlimited laundry service and more.

So, is a round-the-world cruise right for you? For many millennial travelers, the simple answer will be no. It’s much easier to book a longer cruise (around two weeks) than to deal with the strict time commitment and large price tag of a round-the-world cruise. After all, you can always see the world at a slower pace over the course of a few years.
