Although most travelers flock to Mexico City for Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead celebrations), there are less-popular destinations in Mexico that still offer fun and authentic celebrations — one being Puerto Vallarta. Even though the holiday passed earlier this month, it’s not too early to start planning your trip for next year.
I was lucky enough to be in Puerto Vallarta for the days leading up to Día de Los Muertos, and I got to experience some of the celebrations firsthand. While there, I stayed at Casa Velas and had access to the family-friendly Velas Vallarta. Both properties had decorations and celebrations.

At Velas Vallarta, we could learn about legends of the different calavera cartinas, otherwise known as decorated skeletons; admire an altar where loved ones are honored; and join other traditions.
The real celebration happens downtown, where local companies, tourist operators, stores, colleges and more decorate calavera cartinas in different themes and outfits to line the boardwalk for travelers and locals to admire. The display ends at the tallest calavera cartinas in the world, according to The Guinness Book of World Records, which stands at nearly 75 feet tall.

The big celebration starts the night before Nov. 2, as the boardwalk fills with face painters, vendors, and locals and travelers looking for a celebration. The lively boardwalk features clubs, restaurants, stores and more getting in on the celebration.
On Nov. 2, Downtown Puerto Vallarta has its very own Día de Los Muertos parade starting at Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center and ending downtown. The parade is followed by day-long celebrations all over the town.
Visitors can also visit the local cemetery to see families spending time with their loved ones as they cross over for the day. Families decorate their loved ones’ tombstones with colorful flowers, items, and their favorite foods and drinks so they will feel welcome during their time here.
