Launched in August 2011, Kane Brewing Co., is a small craft brewery set on the coast of New Jersey specializing in American-style and Belgian-influenced ales. I discovered the brewery while on a trip to nearby Carton Brewing Company last year and have since visited a handful of times to sample their always delicious line-up of brews.
Owner and master brewer Michael Kane quit his job as an investment banker in March 2010 to open Kane Brewing. Kane was inspired to launch the brewery following travels to European countries where he learned about new beer styles and flavor profiles and trips to small craft breweries in New England. The venue is located near popular Jersey Shore communities like Long Branch and Asbury Park, featuring a spacious taproom with picnic tables and barrels guests can stand by and enjoy their tastings.
I’ve visited Kane when the tasting room is bustling with crowds of visitors and when my group of friends and I are one of the few groups there. While I enjoy both environments, I appreciate a less busy atmosphere allowing me to chat with the friendly employees and learn more about the styles on tap and included ingredients.
Favorites include Head High, a unique and tasty reinterpretation of an American-style India Pale Ale exploding with hoppy flavors; and Overhead, an American-style Imperial India Pale Ale loaded with a bunch of different hops. In addition to year-round brews, Kane also offers its Hop Lab experimental series, featuring one of my favorite stouts, Port Omna; a variety of small batch beers carbonated through a natural process of bottle re-fermentation; barrel-aged brews; and series of mystery beers that generally never make it out of the tasting room.
Visitors fill out a piece of paper with their four picks for a flight and enjoy sizable samples for $5. Next time you find yourself visiting the Jersey Shore, stop by Kane for some refreshing brews in a friendly atmosphere.
