During a recent trip to Kansas City, my husband and I decided to take a break from the city’s popular barbecue scene to sample Scandinavian comfort food at Krokstrom Klubb.
We didn’t have a reservation, but, luckily, there were tables available on the weeknight of our visit. The hostess showed us to a high-top table toward the back of the restaurant. I enjoyed the décor, especially the white lace tablecloths and charming glassware. We settled into our seats and perused the menu while our waitress brought us waters.
The menu features a variety of Scandinavian dishes and drinks. We decided to start with one of the house-made aquavit options. The Scandinavian spirit is distilled from grain or potato. I opted for the flavor with caraway, juniper and grapefruit. For dinner, we decided to split several small plates.
To start, we had a hassleback potato, topped with caviar and sour cream. The hearty dish was perfect on the cold, rainy night. Next, we enjoyed two salads: creamy cucumber and sweet onion and beet with lavender goat cheese. Both were light and refreshing. Finally, we split the smorgasbord plate. The version featured smoked fish, smoked meat, cheese, pickled vegetables and a side of crisp bread and butter. Everything was really flavorful.
To end our meal, we decided to split one of the signature cocktails called a Viking Funeral. The elaborate drink made with bourbon, mead, bitters and cherry wine is poured into a glass that has been smoked. Its preparation is a bit of a spectacle, and we both enjoyed the flavors of the drink.
Krokstrom Klubb is a fun, unique dining experience in Kansas City that’s not to be missed.
