Looking to learn a new language, but not exactly thrilled with your Duolingo experience (that owl can be pretty threatening, after all)? You have options — including language-learning app Memrise.
With more than 76 million users and counting, Memrise aims to help you learn a new language in a way that will actually be useful to you while on the road. When you decide to learn one of the app’s 30 offered languages, you’ll indicate your existing level of fluency and why exactly you’re trying to learn the language, so the app can teach you relevant words and phrases. In fact, these AI-driven lessons can be so specific, you can learn words and phrases based not just around travel, but also recipes, movies, books and more.

As you go along, you’ll listen to native speakers via video, so you can actually hear what a real person sounds like, when they’re speaking the phrases and words you’re trying to commit to memory, in actual conversations. Then, you can practice with the app’s new feature, an AI pronunciation buddy, to ensure you’re pronouncing everything correctly.
Memrise comes with a free plan and a pro plan. The free plan includes courses for 23 languages, access to video clips, gamified tests and personalized review plans. The pro plan offers further learning features and no ads. The pro plan starts at $113.75 for a lifetime plan.
