The most important thing to say about being gay in Greenland is, well, there’s really not much to say. In a country that’s always been more progressive, the LGBT community in Greenland hasn’t faced quite the same struggles as counterparts in other areas.
The small population of the country (less than 60,000), along with the fact that being gay has mostly been accepted easily, means there aren’t a ton of gay-centric events. In fact, the country’s only real Gay Pride parade first sprang up in the capital city of Nuuk as recently as 2010. It’s still going strong, but isn’t nearly the spectacle most Americans are probably used to.
In many ways, this is actually a good thing. When traveling throughout Greenland, you won’t have to worry about being ridiculed or openly discriminated against; they’re all mostly happy to welcome visitors. Finding gay-specific bars isn’t likely to happen as the populations are too low to support any, so you’ll find yourself hanging out with locals in the town’s regular bars.
As the country grows and tourism becomes more popular, more LGBT establishments or nightlife might pop up, but for now you’ll have to be content to enjoy the country exploring local customs and cultures.
