Idaho doesn’t typically come up on the list when one seeks out places to visit that are welcoming toward members of the LGBT community, but you might be surprised to find the capital city of Boise is actually quite hospitable for folks who are a little left of straight.

The city boasts an annual Pride festival and once ranked in the top 12 for Advocate’s Queerest City in America list. With gay marriage officially the law of the land, the population here is starting to skew younger, which means the political climate is beginning to shift. Boise has always been one of the more liberal cities in the state, so you shouldn’t worry too much about feeling unwanted.

For a night on the town you might want to check out Balcony for its live music and dance floor or Neurolux, an all-inclusive dive bar that’s a favorite among locals. You can also grab a decent bite to eat and drinks at the Lucky Dog Tavern, a gay and lesbian bar close to downtown.

If you’re just looking for a place to relax, Flying M Coffee is widely known around town as an LGBT establishment and it serves up some great meals along with live performances on occasion.

No matter where you go in Boise, you’re sure to feel welcome!
