LGBTQ+: Brno, Czech Republic

Brno, Czech Republic – October 13, 2008: night view of City Square, with great nightlife, this square and its surroundings are one of the most visited places by tourists

Destinations / Europe

The Czech Republic legalized same-sex unions in 2006, but there’s yet to be a thriving LGBTQ+ scene outside the capital city. Brno presents many opportunities for travelers to enjoy the country’s rich culture, dining and scenery, but not much in the way of activities for the community.

Brno has only a handful of gay bars, though they each attract a decent crowd. Gibon is the oldest in the city, but has something of a seedy reputation among locals. Greater crowds can be found at both But Bar and Club H46, which feature music and a vibrant atmosphere on the weekends.

Jean Paul’s Bistro is arguably one of the best restaurants in the city for a midday meal and features some delicious Italian fare. Retro Consistorium, on the other hand, offers one of the city’s most extensive wine collections and is perfect if you’re seeking a more upscale atmosphere. Both often attract a younger crowd and welcoming atmosphere where LGBTQ+ travelers can feel at home.

Be sure to spend some time enjoying the beautiful Brno Lake. The local hot spot features a beach, tons of biking and hiking trails, and is within walking distance of a popular zoological garden featuring polar bears. It’s also home to the esteemed Veveří Castle, one of the largest castles in the Czech Republic. You’ll also find a relaxing visit to Náměstí Svobody, the city’s main square, to be a great option for shopping, dining and mingling with the locals.
