LGBTQ+: Durban, South Africa

Durban was once considered the LGBTQ+ capital of South Africa. The nation’s third-largest city has seen a decline in gay gathering spots over the years, and lost the title to its larger neighbors, but it’s still a great destination. Sandy beaches, abundant sunshine and a sprawling urban atmosphere make it a must-see.

The LGBTQ+ scene is centered on Durban’s Morningside neighborhood. The cozy community is three miles inland and was once home to dozens of gay-owned restaurants and bars. These days there are far fewer Pride flags handing outside the windows, but it’s still welcoming to members of the community. Club Altitude is the largest and most popular gay bar in the city and offers a great place to mingle with locals and dance to some of the best DJs.

When you’re not clubbing it up, Durban has some of the greatest beaches in the country. The most popular beaches are spread across the Golden Mile, a stretch of coastline that offers dozens of restaurants, bars and piers. Ansteys Beach is great for those who seek something a little more laidback — it’s a great place to meet locals.

Other highlights of Durban include the city’s botanical gardens, the oldest surviving in Africa. The Durban Natural Science Museum offers great showcases on the history of Earth, and Florida Road is a popular spot for young locals looking to party.

The city still boasts a yearly Pride event every June, along with the annual Durban Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. It’s the oldest LGBTQ+ film festival in Africa and a must for anyone visiting in late September.
