Destinations / North America

The desert city of Tucson, Arizona, is a culturally progressive oasis in the southwestern United States and a must for any LGBTQ+ traveler. Nestled in the valley of five mountain ranges, the state’s second-largest city is home to some incredible Mexican-inspired architecture, a stunning cactus-lined landscape and a welcoming atmosphere.

Ten historic districts and a bustling arts district surround the heart of Old Pueblo and showcase the best of Arizona’s theater, opera and ballet. The downtown area is also home to St. Augustine Cathedral, two historic train depots, a bevvy of bed and breakfasts and terrific shopping opportunities. Outside of the city you’ll find some of America’s best wine country — about 14 wineries in total — and plenty of adventurous activities like mountain biking through Saguaro National Park or exploring Colossal Cave.

Tucson also hosts Pride in the Desert each year in October, alongside a number of other LGBTQ+ events year-round. There’s no shortage of bars in downtown, but the progressive atmosphere means there’s not much segregation. IBT’s and Brodie’s Tavern are two of the more popular gay venues, but you’ll find most of the nightlife here enjoys a mixed crowd.

As far as lodging goes, you’d be hard-pressed to find accommodations that aren’t LGBTQ+ friendly. The Presidio Inn Bed & Breakfast offers a taste of authentic Tucson in a 1886 Victorian adobe home, while the Adobe Inn offers a more modern adobe appeal in the beautiful Sam Hughes neighborhood.

Tucson’s warmth and charm make it one of the best cities in the country for LGBTQ+ travelers and should certainly be on everyone’s bucket list.
