LGBTQ+: Yerevan

Trends / LGBTQIA+

Armenia was somewhat of an early adopter of LGBTQ+ rights, having decriminalized homosexuality in 2003, but there is no large scene in the country today. Yerevan once boasted a few gay clubs, but public opinion of the community has yet to progress, meaning it can be dangerous to be open here.

However, Yerevan offers plenty of beauty and unique historical culture to explore if you’re willing to go. As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Yerevan has truly incredible architecture. The Cascade sits in the city center and is a giant stairwell with eight levels connecting two of the city’s most popular neighborhoods. The views from the top are worth the climb alone. There’s also the Opera House, the 18th-century Blue Mosque and Republic Square to Explore. The pedestrian-only street of Northern Avenue is 450 meters long and one of the best places to shop in the city.

At nighttime, Yerevan boasts an abundance of bars and clubs to enjoy. Paparazzi Club is one of the most popular, but has a strict “face control” policy that limits the number of men and women allowed in. Be prepared to slip the doorman some cash. Calumet is one of the oldest clubs in town and a must. It gets packed early so be prepared to wait, but the live music is top notch.

Thankfully, sharing a hotel room with a member of the same sex is nothing of concern in Yerevan. There are tons of beautiful accommodations available in the city and Tufenkian is arguably the best. The boutique hotel is located just outside of Republic Square in a breathtaking historical building. The inside is filled with designer furnishings and one of the top restaurants in the city.

While exploring Yerevan means traveling with discretion, we still think it’s a wonderful city to visit and hope it progresses further in the coming years in regards to LGBTQ+ rights.
