Float tanks are all the rage these days, signaling a new wave in the spa market. These so-called “sensory deprivation” experiences involve being suspended in an Epsom salt-treated pool of water that reduces sensory stimulation and can be a spiritual experience or just a relaxing one. Most sessions last for 60 minutes, which gives you enough time to relax and unwind. Some people say it contributes to psychological and physical healing, while others just think it’s a great way to relieve the stress of the day.
Seattle’s LifeFloat is the only float spa in the city that does not use tanks or pods. Instead, patrons have access to private float pools that avoid the claustrophobic effect of tanks – a welcome addition, as pods have a lid on them and can be quite scary if you have issues with small spaces.
After a 60-minute soak at LifeFloat, I felt extremely relaxed and rejuvenated. The water is about the same temperature as the human body, so I felt truly deprived of any sensation after just a few minutes in the water. I thought at first that it might be hard to hold my head up, or that free-floating would be uncomfortable, but it was neither.
The room contains a shower, toilet, towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and light and music controls, so you can truly customize the experience. I’d highly recommend LifeFloat to anyone in the Seattle area who needs an uninterrupted hour of self-indulgence and relaxation.
