American football has taken root in Mexico and it only looks to grow. The Liga de Futbol Americano Profesional is a professional football league based in Mexico City that began in 2016. The league started with four teams and since added two more, quickly becoming a favorite among citizens.

Mexico’s version of football takes the sport back to its roots, with less focus on the endless rules you find in today’s American league and more emphasis on having fun and competition. The teams all initially play on a rented soccer field in the country’s capital with phantom uprights and goalposts still in clear view. These days they’ve branched out to stadiums in their own respective cities across the country.

While not as glamorous as what we might be used to, the sport is fiercely competitive and still a blast to watch. The stadiums pack more than 5,000 seats each game during the season. Mexico’s attempt to build off of the large fan base of NFL teams living south of the border seems to be paying off, with allegiances steadily switching to the home teams.

Much like American football, the Liga de Futbol Americano Profesional overtakes the airwaves Thursday through Monday to highlight the competition. Occasionally you’ll even see former NFL stars participating in one-game events to help draw a crowd. The Mexican league is a fantastic, affordable option for people who love American football and want to spend more time watching the guys play than arguing over flags.
