GoPro had the action camera market cornered for a number of years, but now it is facing competition from a variety of different rivals.
Camera-maker Nikon is the latest company to enter the market, releasing its KeyMission 360 in January. The company has a long and storied history in optical technology, and is still with Canon to see which is the king of the digital SLR market.
With the KeyMission 360, Nikon is picking a fight with GoPro. The new product is a rugged action camera that can record 360-degree video in 4K UHD, engineered to withstand the stresses of travel and extreme situations.
In order to create 360-degree images, the new camera uses an image sensor and lens on both sides of the camera to capture separate images which it then combines into one image. The high-tech components are protected by a tough shell, and the camera is waterproof up to 100 feet.
Nikon certainly has the reputation to wrestle some market share away from GoPro, and the company will release a range of accessories in a complete package. Other action cameras will follow the KeyMission 360, but it will be exciting to see whether Nikon’s expertise in DSLR will translate to the action camera sector.
If tests show the camera is a decent product, we could see the emergence of the first serious rival to GoPro in the action camera market.
