Lux Helsinki light show celebrates its seventh year in January 2015. Located in spots throughout Helsinki’s city center, Kansalaistori Park and Senate Square, 17 installations are on view during the five-day event. Last year’s event saw more than 150,000 visitors.
“The Lux Helsinki Event 2015 will celebrate the 20-year history of light events in Helsinki. In addition to familiar locations, this year the artworks will be on show in less frequently used exhibition sites in the city. They will include works attached to the city architecture, stand-alone light sculptures and artworks which the whole family can help to complete,” said Ilkka Paloniemi, artistic director, Lux Helsinki.
This year’s event debuts two new installations. OVO draws inspiration from an egg shape. The structure has a wood base, which visitors can walk through to be surrounded with light animation and soundscape. The egg shape symbolizes new life. Mandala, the other new installation, is a series of artworks using implements for the treatment of diabetes. LED lights illuminate insulin pens, syringes, blood glucose test strips and lancets to create the installation. Mandala is Sanskrit for circle or connection and the symbolism is to view something terrifying as beautiful.
Installations can be viewed Jan. 4–8, 2015, from 5–10 p.m. Lux Helsinki is free of charge.
