Staying safe while traveling is every traveler’s priority, especially when it comes to your accommodations. You want to be able to rest your head without worrying about your safety. Unfortunately, many travelers face situations they wish they hadn’t merely because of where they are staying for the night. Before you check in, practice these simple yet important hotel safety tips.
Request rooms on higher levels
The ground floor of a hotel is the most susceptible to break-ins and crime, especially if the hallways are outside. If you don’t want to worry about someone breaking in, you might feel more secure requesting a room on a higher level.
Don’t advertise your hotel room number
Many travelers, without even knowing it, advertise their hotel room number to thieves. Most hotels place key cards in paper jackets with the room number listed on the sleeve. Once you have your room number down, remove this sleeve. If you empty your pocket at a bar or restaurant, someone could be watching and looking to swipe your room number.
Use the do not disturb sign to your advantage
You might be headed out of your hotel room for dinner and putting up the Do Not Disturb sign is the last thing on your mind. Just as you might set timers at your home when you are away, to make your hotel room safer, you should make it appear like you are home. Leave the TV on if you can and place the Do Not Disturb sign on the door. You are less likely to be the target of thieves because they will think someone is in the room.
Don’t always trust the hotel safe
If you are concerned about your valuables while traveling, the hotel safe isn’t always safe. To feel more secure, you can pack your own in the form of a luggage lock. In cases where the staff is stealing, you stand a better chance of not having your bag broken into than the hotel safe where someone does have the master key.
