Matei Corvin Restaurant is located in the heart of the Romanian town of Cluj-Napoca, tucked away on an unassuming pedestrian street with limited seating both inside and out. The family-owned eatery is a great example of traditional Transylvanian cuisine and one of my favorite little spots to dine in the city.
The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming and the staff does a fantastic job making you feel as if you’re eating in your own home. The décor is a tad dated, possibly not changed since Communism ended, but it sort of feels like you’re spending the evening at grandma’s house, in a way.
During our last visit the owner came out to make suggestions so I went with the paprika chicken with mămăligă (cornmeal), while my friend sampled the matittei with fries. The restaurant is well known for providing generous portions and there was more food than we were able to eat, but all of it was certainly delicious! They also gave us an ample, crunchy salad on the side with dressing that was absolutely perfect.
The prices at Matei Corvin are budget friendly, which plays a large role in it being one of my favorites, but even if they chose to increase them I’d still be sure to stop on my next trip. I would highly recommend this restaurant to family and friends.
