Midsommarfest in Sweden marks the summer solstice and is distinguished by good food, flower crowns and general merriment. It is so beloved many people leave the city on Midsommer Eve so they can be sure to enjoy the start of summer out in the country. There is dancing around the Maypole and a traditional dinner, which consists of herring and roasted potatoes. At night, a bonfire is usually lit. This tradition harkens back to agrarian times. Since the fest falls at the moment the days are longest in Sweden, it was seen as a time of celebration and fertility.
Midsommarfest in the neighborhood of Andersonville in Chicago is something different. There is no countryside or traditional bonfire, at least not on purpose. There are, however, flower crowns and Maypole dancing. It is set in an asphalt wilderness on a long stretch of Clark Avenue on Chicago’s north side. There is plenty to do in the way of bands, vendors and carnival games, but if traditional Swedish culture is what you are looking for, you may leave a little disappointed.
The Andersonville neighborhood is, however, traditionally Swedish and there are some Swedish restaurants and a Swedish museum on this stretch of land, so, if you are so inclined, take a gander at those on your way to purchasing the largest plate of loaded potato chips imaginable.
