Movement matters. We can all agree with this statement. Western society pushes us toward exercise and healthy eating, while also cultivating collective habits that create sedentary lifestyles. These habits do not just have negative effects on our own health, but the health of our families and our communities.
Movement Matters is a collection of essays on movement science and movement ecology, written by Katy Bowman, who also wrote Dynamic Aging and Move your DNA.
Katy Bowman is a biomechanist by training and made it her life’s work to understand how to combat the increasingly sedentary lifestyle of Western life. Her latest book looks at how we have lost sight of everyday movements and how even small movements matter. She examines the science of movement in our bodies and in the world around us. Not moving not only affects how you live right now, but it trains your musculature to move less over time, stiffening the body and resulting in chronic pain. She also delves into our societal and physiological roots by examining how movement (hunting and gathering for instance) cultivated society over time and how less movement is unsustainable for our future.
In spite of our desire for convenience in everyday life, we may want to try to look at the world from a mobile perspective. You can find more information on the Movement Matters philosophy at Katy Bowman’s website Nutritious Movements.
