Narrentag, or Fool’s Day, in Germany is a celebration of the beginning of the fifth season that lasts through Lent. The festival is a raucous affair featuring colorful masks and stunning performances involving dance and even a little sword fighting. The holiday is typically celebrated in January with the town of Überlingen throwing the best carnival.
More than15,000 spectators gather annually for the event featuring live music and quirky costumes. The seaside town brings together authentic culinary cuisine from around the world for guests to sample, and often prepares goofy boat displays to float across the water for spectator’s enjoyment. The boats are filled with costumed characters engaging in foolish behavior, and a delight for both children and adults.
The festivities begin early in the day on Saturday and culminate that night with a parade through the city streets. On Sunday, revelers gather for a terrific sword dance performance in the city square. There’s also a morning concert featuring bands from around the region, and another parade where locals show off their intricate outfits and plays tricks on people watching in the streets.
Hotels for Narrentag fill up quickly in Überlingen, so it’s important to book ahead. Plenty of towns throughout Germany celebrate the holiday, so it might be worthwhile to stop in and take a peek.
