Off-peak traveling can mean a variety of things. If you travel a lot, it is important to have a solid strategy for getting the most out of your money. Traveling in ways considered off-peak can be broken down into three categories: seasonal, transportation and lodging. Understanding how all three of these areas work can save you money in the long run.
When thinking about a time to travel, sometimes you have no choice. If you want to be in New York on New Year’s Eve, you are tied to a schedule. But most of the time there is a lot more flexibility in when and where we choose to go. Seasonal travel is up to our discretion and it is well worth finding out the peak travel times for a location and then figuring out how much you can play with that and still enjoy yourself. You don’t want to find yourself in a desert in high summer, but you might do well to go two weeks before summer starts. You may not want to go on a cruise during hurricane season, but if you are flexible you can hug the edges of less favorable seasons to get significant discounts on flights.
Providers like cheapair.com will try to get you the best possible prices for any travel season, but you can also use these as markers to try and book a little before the high season starts. Another way to play with peak-travel ranges is to book your lodging through Airbnb so you are in a location on weekdays. If you are traveling during a traditionally less busy season and able to stay in your location on weekdays, the price of many accommodations will drop and give you a little more cash to spend on actually enjoying your vacation.
