Travelers to Seattle usually hit the familiar spots: the Space Needle, Pike Place Market and the downtown waterfront are all top spots on the tourist circuit.

While these are worth checking out, there are lots of other ways to experience Seattle without the massive crowds that pack into the tourist attractions. Instead, you’ll get a sense of what life is like in the Emerald City, and bring home some unique experiences.
Base your visit around the city’s parks and its neighborhoods. Spots like Gasworks Park, Discovery Park and Seward Park are local favorites for long walks, scenic views and sunny day picnics.

Neighborhoods like Fremont, Ballard, Capitol Hill and Columbia City offer some of the city’s best restaurants, bars, nightlife and shopping opportunities. Consider planning your trip around a stop at one of the neighborhood farmers markets in these areas, where you can truly get a sense of the regional culture — and pick up some tasty picnic items for that aforementioned park visit.
Consider renting a stand-up paddleboard, kayak, sailboat or bicycle to further explore Seattle the way a local would. You’ll get a close-up view of Seattle’s scenery and stumble upon some hidden gems in the process.
