Safety

Parasailing can be a great adrenaline rush and an exciting excursion for your vacation, but like any activity that involves being suspended 500 feet in the sky, there are potential dangers involved. Proper research and precaution could be the difference between life or death.

Make Sure the Parasailing Company is Legitimate

If you are parasailing stateside, the captain of the boat should be licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard. Even when abroad, most countries require parasailing guides be licensed. At the very least, your guides should give you extensive safety instruction before you take flight. If you have any apprehensions at all regarding the qualifications of those involved, simply ask for a refund and try sailing with another group.

Check the Weather

Fog, rain, wind and rough seas can all make your flight potentially dangerous. If the weather turns while you are in the air, don’t be afraid to signal the instructors to bring you down. Also, if you are in a region that has a rainy season, you may want to look into another way to spend your day.

Inspect the Equipment

Numerous studies have shown most parasailing accident occur from canopy failure. Holes and tears are common from the well-worn and often waterlogged equipment. Ask your guides to let you look at the parachute before taking flight.
