What to Do in Party Cities (Besides Party)

Major cities like Miami, Las Vegas, Amsterdam and Berlin have one thing in common: they draw the ilk of traveler that prefers nightclubs, late nights and foggy memories. But such locales offer a lot more than just a party atmosphere rife with drunken bar-hopping and late-night junk food benders. When visiting a place known for its noise, here are a few ways to find a bit of tranquility.

Instead of downing margaritas in Mexico City, head to the Roma neighborhood for a bit of street strolling and restaurant hopping. Although the area can be quite crowded with visitors, it’s not difficult to carve out a place of peace in one of the local museums or cafes.

In Barcelona, instead of getting down, head up. Lace up your walking shoes for a casual incline to the top of Montjuic where stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and sub-Pyrenees mountains await. Across the sea in Ibiza, rent a car and explore lesser-visited areas of the island for snorkeling, diving and quiet dinners along the coast.

Opt to visit New Orleans’ French Quarter during the day when there are fewer bead-throwers but still just as much live music and lively restaurants. At night, head to nearby neighborhoods of Marigny or Algiers.

Finally, in Sin City, rent a car and take daytrips to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam. After dark, catch one of Vegas’ legendary magic or musical performances.
