Planning a winter getaway around seeing some heavy snowfall before heading back to your home in a warmer climate? Pick one of these destinations that receive some of the heaviest yearly snowfalls in the world.
Aomori, Japan, is a lovely foreign getaway with a reputation as the top major city to receive a mammoth snowfall each year — an average of 312 inches. It’s not uncommon to see roads carved out of snow banks towering more than 15 feet high. There are 15 ski resorts in the area for you to take your pick.
Of course, even if it only receives an average of 191 inches of snowfall each year, fellow Japanese destination Sapporo can certainly hold its own, especially as it’s home to the Sapporo Snow Festival, which attracts millions to the city, transformed by glittering ice and snow sculptures.
Quebec City offers all the urban attractions you need, such as luxury hotels, the beautiful historic district and more, while also being one of the snowiest destinations on the East Coast. At 124 inches per year, its only competition is Syracuse, N.Y.
If you really want to go all out and also see a place your friends and family most likely won’t, you can always head for Siberia. The infamously harsh winters are certainly rough, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a nice place to stay. Krasnoyarsk is home to an international festival of snow and ice sculptures, and is also one of the most affluent cities in Siberia.
