If you’re looking for an all-around outstanding hydration system, look no further than the SoftBottle from Platypus. Whether you’re shopping for a water bottle for hiking or just for general use, Platypus has you covered with this great product.
The bottle is a compactable, flexible water bottle that is extremely lightweight (the one liter version weighs just 0.9 ounces), around 80 percent less weight than a traditional, hard bottle. Unlike other similar products, the bottle will not transfer any off-putting, plastic-y taste to your water; it’s also made with BPA-free plastic. You’ll feel especially virtuous buying this product because, as the company says, “Per the materials and manufacturing processes we use, the SoftBottle has a lower overall environmental impact than many other manufactured water bottle options.”
The bottle’s lid has a simple screw cap closure system that can be fitted with accessories like a Bite Valve Cover, Drink Tube Kit and HyperFlow Cap, all available for separate purchase from Platypus.
While some reviewers seemed to have problems with closure system leakage and holes forming easily, the bottle seemed to stand up well and did not leak for this user. After several back-country trips where the bottle was stuffed in a backpack, there were a few creases but none that seemed to threaten the integrity of the bottle and no leaks occurred.
