Tips / Other

Going to a jazz club can be intimidating for those unfamiliar with the genre. The music has an image of sophistication, so follow these tips to ensure you don’t embarrass yourself.

No Phones

The club you’re going to will most likely be filled with old heads, so they’re not going to appreciate your selfies in the first row. If you want a few snaps, do it from the back and with the flash turned off.

Pay Attention

Unless it’s a louder style, most jazz is quiet and dynamic, so there’s little room for chatter. That doesn’t mean you can’t applaud the musicians. It’s customary to clap after solos as well, though take your cues from the crowd since some bands like to do four-bar solo exchanges between a few members.

Participate

Club venues sometimes like participation, from basic clapping to eliciting shouts from the crowd. Pay attention to the style of the song since you don’t want to shout in the middle of a slow ballad. Some places will host swing bands for dancing as well. If you want to make a request, remember it’s customary to tip.

Drinking and the Restroom

Some clubs have table service, others have a bar and some want you to wait until the song ends before getting up for the restroom. Do a little research and find out what’s the protocol at your particular establishment.
